Is China among the most preferred destinations for Nepali students?
Sujit Mainali / April 4, 2016
Prime Minister K P Oli, speaking at Beijing-based Renmin University on March 22 said: “China remains one of the most preferred destinations for the students from Nepal.”
South Asia Check has examined whether the statement is fact-based or not.
For this, we studied a report “Nepal: Education in Figures 2015” published by the Ministry of Education to figure out how many “no objection letters” were issued by the ministry to students for abroad studies.
The report has compiled the number of “no objection letters” issued to students from FY 2068/69 to FY 2071/72.
During the period, the ministry issued the highest numbers of ‘no objection letters” to the students headed for Australia and Japan (27,756 and 22,807 respectively), according to the report.
China was the sixth most preferred destination for Nepali students for further studies. The number of “no objection letters” issued during the period to the students headed for China was 2,093.
Thus, PM Oli is right in saying that China is among the most preferred destinations for the students from Nepal.
