Dahal wrong about murder of Nepali migrant workers

CPN (Maoist Center) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal, while addressing parliament this week before his election as the new prime minister said:

“The number of Nepalis being murdered abroad is also increasing.”

Dahal made this statement while talking about Nepali migrant workers.

South Asia Check has examined whether this statement is fact-based or not.

The latest report prepared by the Department of Foreign Employment titled “Labour Migration for Employment, A Status Report for Nepal: 2013/14” includes the total number of Nepali workers who left the country, those who died, and those murdered in the destination countries between fiscal years 2008/09 and 2013/14.

According to the report, both the numbers of Nepali migrant workers leaving the country and those dying in the destination countries are increasing every year.

According to the report, the number of Nepali migrant workers murdered in destination countries was almost constant – 1 or 2 per year – except in the fiscal year 2010/11 when 40 murders were recorded.

Compared to the increasing number of workers leaving the country, and those dying in the destination countries, murder numbers are decreasing.

Therefore, Dahal’s statement is not correct.
