UML chief Oli wrongly claims current parliament is only authorized to make election-related laws
Sujit Mainali / December 5, 2016
CPN-UML Chairman and former Prime Minister KP Oli while addressing a function in Kathmandu on November 27 said: “The current transitional parliament is only authorized [by the constitution] to formulate election-related laws. This is not a federal parliament.”
South Asia Check has examined whether this statement is fact-based or not.
Article 296(1) of the Constitution of Nepal-2015 states that the Constituent Assembly shall be transformed into a Legislature-Parliament after the commencement of the constitution.
Article 269(3) further states, “Pursuant to this Constitution, the Legislature Parliament…shall conduct all the activities under the prerogative of the Federal Legislature.”
Oli rightly said that the current parliament is not a federal parliament. But still this parliament is entitled to conduct all the activities under the prerogative of the Federal Parliament.
Therefore, Oli’s claim that the current transitional parliament is only authorized to make election-related laws is wrong.
